At their December 13th meeting, the Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees voted to approve San Bernardino Valley College President Dr. Debra Daniels as the 8th president of the first public community college in the Uni ted States. Starting on March 1, 2012, Dr. Daniels will replace Dr. Gena Proulx who lost her three-year battle with cancer in August.
Highlighted by her 30 years of higher education experience— including the last five years as President of San Bernardino Valley College—Dr. Daniels was selected from dozens of applicants by a 14-member search commit tee at the suburban Chicago -area campus.
Accomplishments during her 4 years at San Bernardino Valley College include: building/ opening six new buildings, increasing enrollment to 10,000 full-time equivalents (FTE), affirming accreditation through 2014, maintaining financial stability despite state budget cutbacks, and establ ishing the award-winning Valley-Bound Commitment program that provides a free first year of college to local high school graduates.
“It’s truly an exciting time for me as I’ve studied Joliet Junior College since I was a graduate student,” Daniels said.
“However, I will absolutely miss the opportunity I’ve had to lead the team of faculty and staff at SBVC who are focused on helping our 12,000+ students achieve their educational dreams each and every day.”
