For one week at Cal State San Bernardino, clowning around in class will be acceptable. Not only that, but students will be encouraged to tickle each other’s funny bones.
California Clown Campin’, a week-long residential camp for clowns, returns to the CSUSB campus for its second year. The 2011 camp runs until Aug. 6. The camp is for all kinds of clowns of all abilities, experience and walks of life, as well as for those who may be considering a clown career or clowning as an avocation. Campers and camp staff will come from all over the United States and Canada.
“It’s strictly for the advancement of quality clowning,” said Laura Sicklesteel, co-director and facilitator of California Clown Campin’ and manager of CSUSB’s printing services department when she isn’t clowning around as Molly the Clown.
During the week, clown campers will hone their skills in makeup and costume techniques, pie fights (it’s quite the workshop to experience), skit writing, nursing home clowning, juggling, ballooning from basic to advanced, face painting, magic and everything else that goes into the craft of clowning.
The capper of the week is the International Clown Extravaganza at the Santos Manuel Student Union Theater on campus on Friday, Aug. 5.
The show, which starts at 7 p.m., is open to the public, the clowns opening the doors at 6:15 p.m. to welcome the audience with face painting and balloons.
General admission is $10 per person, and a family pack of tickets is $25 for four people.
The clown camp came to CSUSB after another camp ended its 29-year run at the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse in the summer of 2009. Sicklesteel had attended that camp for seven years. “There are many former camp graduates that wanted this type of comprehensive, quality educational experience to continue so we cloned the original camp with the blessing and expertise of Richard Snowberg, the originator of Clown Camp, and simply relocated it to CSUSB,” Sicklesteel said.
