The tragedy which recently struck Japan with the tsunami in the aftermath of a 9.0 earthquake, now known to have killed thousands and made tens of thousands homeless as a result of the nuclear plant meltdowns has caused many San Bernardino city residents to inquire about the safety of the city’s sister city, Tachikawa Japan.

Tachikawa, Japan, which is about 60 miles from Tokyo, has been the City of San Bernardino’s sister city for over 50 years, and one of the longest standing sister city relationships in the nation.

When San Bernardino experienced the Old Fire nearly seven years ago, residents in its sister city of Tachikawa sent $20,000 for disaster assistance to the families that lost homes in the Old Fire.

The sister city committee in San Bernardino invites residents who would like to make a tax deductible contribution to do so with the local committee which will be forwarded to sister city counterparts in Tachikawa for disbursement to the appropriate agencies in the hardest hit areas of Japan.

Checks should be made payable to Tachikawa-San Bernardino Sister City Committee, and mailed to 3608 N. Pershing, San Bernardino, CA 92405 with a notation on the memo of “Disaster Relief Assistance to Japan.”

A major portion of the former U.S. Air base in Tachikawa has been converted into the Tachikawa National Disaster Preparedness Base with a major trauma hospital specifically built for disaster response. Disaster victims have been medevac’d to this center. This makes the disaster immediate and personal to San Bernardino’s sister city Tachikawa and its citizens.
