An estimated 160 students Friday received certificates from Senator Barbara Boxer’s office acknowledging their advance or proficient scores on the most recent Star/California Standards Testing.
This year the score of 690 was up from 648 of the previous year in math and English, according to Mr. Charles Brown, Rio Vista’s principal.
“It is important to celebrate these students,” Brown told the audience of an estimated 500 students, teachers and parents attending the outdoor celebration, filled with music, confetti and smiles.
In addition to the certificates presented by Ryan Tenney representing Senator Boxer, the boys and girls were given the Principal’s Award Medallion.
Other students at the school were recognized for perfect attendance, good citizenship or improvement in reading and math. Mr. Brown used the term “going green.” The school devotes every Wednesday to wearing green and motivating the children to achieve proficient or advance on the school’s assessments.
The principal set a lofty goal for 2011 regarding the school’s performance.
“We will continue to do what we have to do to get to 800,” Brown said to the assembly, which ended in cheers and The Black Voice News applause in agreement.
