In response to President Obama’s directive to move towards more efficient uses of energy, a new program to train workers specialized in Weatherization has been developed. The Weatherization program administered by the Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAPSBC) has been conducting training and graduated its first class of certified Weatherization Specialists on Friday, June 18, 2010.

The 20 students who graduated were screened and selected to participate in the training program which teaches basic weatherization, blower door and duct/shell sealing, and combustion appliance safety. The weatherization program is creating a pool of qualified workers for this emerging job market.

“Reaching out to individuals in the community with this specialized training represents the second phase of Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County’s Weatherization program.

In the first phase of the program, employers throughout California were provided the opportunity to send in their workers who need training in this field. Our Weatherization Training Center is the only certified weatherization training facility in Southern California,” said CAPSBC CEO Patricia L. Nickols.

The program is being administered in conjunction with San Bernardino Community College District, the Inland Empire Green Employer Advisory Council, the County of San Bernardino, and the United States Green Building Council Inland Empire Chapter (USGBC-IE). “At a time when education and training opportunities are desperately needed to stimulate the regional economy, we are proud to serve the residents throughout the County with this training grant,” said grant author Kevin Fleming of San Bernardino Community College District. “At least 60 residents within the county will benefit from this weatherization training program over the next year. The goal is to prepare them for ‘green collar’ jobs close to home.”

The Green Employer Advisory Council is seeking to connect area employers to these trained workers for formal apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, on-the-job training, and other employment opportunities.

An employer workshop was hosted by CAPSBC on June 8 for employers and training providers to discuss the opportunities. Sean Grimes, an account executive with Aerotek Energy Services, stated “As a supplier of personnel to Renewable Energy projects in the Inland Empire, I will be employing candidates from the recent Green Employer Job Forum.

Furthermore, I will be relying on the Green Employer Advisory Committee as a source for current information on legislation and other factors affecting our industry.”

Employers interested in finding out more about the program are encouraged to call Diane Wirth, Executive Director of The U.S. Green Building Council-Inland Empire at 877-605-7424.
