Some of the men and women who served their country courageously as veterans return home to go without a home. Ret. Air Force Master Sgt. Sharon Yvonne Forbes finds them under freeways or on street corners holding signs: "Vietnam vet. Will work for food."
Forbes always volunteers to help some of the nation's estimated 150,000 homeless veterans in any way she can -- finding food, permanent shelter, clothing or legal resources. Her generosity and selflessness has earned her recognition from the state legislature as Assemblymember Wilmer Amina Carter's 62nd District Veteran of the Year.
Forbes will be formally recognized at the State Capitol on June 23.
Forbes, a contracting officer with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare Systems, joined 21 veterans who were honored at Assemblymember Carter's 2010 Veterans Appreciation Reception on May 13.
"Helping others is something instilled in me as a child," said Forbes, a San Bernardino resident who also helps veterans' families and foster care children. "Even if we didn't have, we were there to help others."
"We can find inspiration in Sharon Forbes for her years of service to homeless veterans," Assemblymember Carter said.
