Westside Action Group (WAG) spoke and Danny Tillman President of the San Bernardino Board of Education rebutted at a press conference held in front of the district office.

WAG gave San Bernardino Superintendent Arturo Delgado an unsatisfactory rating because “he has not given district staff the support to carry out the Targeted Instructional Improvement Policy (TIIP) put in place to improve the academic achievement of the lowest performing group in the district, African American students” announced WAG’s Walter Hawkins.

To this Tillman charged it as a political move to help County Superintendent Gary Thomas win the seat that both are vying for. The seat was vacated by Dr. Herb Fischer, who retired and Thomas was appointed almost two years ago.

Tillman said that schools that were put on the list have shown improvement in the last two years and that these numbers went back five years. Tillman said he would take full responsibility for the problems that have landed 11 San Bernardino District schools in the bottom 5% in the state. But he believes games are being played because looking at the test scores of the surrounding district some are lower than the schools selected in San Bernardino. And county schools has the worst scores in the area.

WAG recently endorsed Thomas for the Superintendent. Tillman is in support of Delgado’s candidacy.
