The date 10/2/10 is important because it is the last day in most states but most importantly in California, to register to vote.

So the national NAACP is holding a huge rally on the mall in front of the Lincoln Statue to reinforce what Martin Luther King, Jr. did when he gave the “I Have a Dream” speech. Hillary Shelton, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy in the NAACP’s Washington Bureau said, in an interview with California Black Media (CBM), that the call is to restore the opportunity we have to pull America back together. “The mid-term elections are important and people need to register and vote. It seems people have become complacent- we want to bring all races together our coalition includes, the Civil Rights community, women, labor and religion,” he said.

Shel ton said that NAACP’s number one focus is on creating jobs. “We support President Obama’s agenda to create 1 million new jobs in the public sector,” he said.

“It has taken 13 to 16 years to get many initiatives passed this President has been successful on hard fought Health Care and Hate Crimes bill. People need to know what is at stake in this mid-term election,” he said. In short, everyone needs to vote.

In Los Angeles, there will be a massive day of action at Los Angeles City College. They will bring area residents together in an effort to re-energize voters and call for an end to polarizing tactics that are being used to divide our country.

“There’s no question that at a time when we should be united as a nation to tackle the issues of unemployment, the economy, poverty, education, immigration and justice for all, many Americans feel disconnected,” said Angelica Salas, Executive Director of Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). “It is time for us to continue the movement of political engagement that we started in 2008. One Nation Working Together is the vehicle by which we can do that.”

One Nation Working Together is a fast-growing grassroots movement of people from all backgrounds united by the goal of reordering our nation’s priorities to invest in our most valuable resource-our people.
