RIVERSIDE – Riverside City Manager Scott Barber today announced the appointment of Tom Boyd as Director of Public Works. Boyd joined the City of Riverside in 1998 and has served as Interim Public Works Director since October, 2011. During his tenure as Interim Public Works Director, Boyd initiated a number of projects to continue to improve Riverside’s Quality of Life while meeting the daily needs of our residents.

Tom was chosen following a national recruitment that produced highly qualified candidates. City Manager Scott Barber said “I thought it was especially satisfying to know where Tom stood compared with the best in the Public Works field.  All members of the interview panel were not only impressed with Tom’s professional knowledge and excellent fit for this City, but by his commitment to Riverside.”

The Public Works Department maintains, operates and improves the City’s infrastructure, including a 40 million gallon a day wastewater treatment plan, 1,000 miles of sewers, 870 miles of streets, 300 miles of storm drains, 360 traffic signals, and 117,500 trees. The Department also operates the City’s solid waste, street maintenance, graffiti abatement, parking, and animal services programs. As Director, Boyd will lead a department of 413 employees and oversee an operating budget of $223 million and approximately $210 million of current capital projects. Major projects for 2012 include initiating construction of Phase 1 of the Water Quality Control Plant expansion and the Iowa Avenue grade separation.

Boyd has over thirty years of engineering experience in both the public and private sectors. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is a California Registered Professional Civil Engineer.
