By Cindy Watson –
A new year of programs has begun for local youth with the Banning Cultural Alliance as they kick off their fourth year with the Youth Arts Council (YAC).
YAC held their first meeting in January of 2009, quickly becoming very active members of the Pass area community. Since forming, YAC has planned or planned for and participated in numerous events throughout the Pass area.
Continuing programs this year are the Youth Arts Council, a team of youth ages 13 to 19, that helps coordinate and plan not only their own events and programs but those of others. YAC members attend numerous events each year providing fun things to share and do with other youth and families. Some of their own very successful events have been top ten open venues, Halloween events, other holiday concerts and parties and their own venue at last year’s Art Hop.
Other programs that the Alliance offers are: Vocal Club, where all ages can come and work on their vocal instrument with Ms. Watson, the program director for the Alliance.
One of the Alliance’s most successful programs for youth is Top Ten: The Next Level, where teens practice and perform, sharing their talents such as singing, instrumental, comedic and more, throughout the community.
This year Top Ten - The Next Level, is expanding to include a Top Ten Junior for youth ages 12 and under. Auditions for both programs will be held Jan 12, from 3 to 5 pm at the Banning Woman’s Club, 175 W Hays. Additional auditions times can be arranged on most Thursday during practice.
In addition Ms. Watson will be back at the Banning Library twice per month starting on January 18, in the teen room from 1 to 3 pm; with art classes and crafts free to all.
In February Ms. Watson will host a class February 1 and February 15.
Additional art classes are available for youth through the Banning Center for the Arts on 130 N. San Gorgonio Ave.
The Alliance Youth Schedule is: Monday 2:30 to 3:30pm Door Open; 3:30 to 4:30pm YAC meeting, ages 13 to 19; 4:45 to 6pm Vocal Club, all ages; and 6 to 6:45pm Stage Practice, all ages.
