INLAND EMPIRE – The American Cancer Society’s African American Community Outreach Committee hosting its annual free conference, this year entitled “Living Smart Cancer Awareness” on Saturday, Apri1 21, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Parkview Community Hospital in the Founder’s Center Daily Room, located at 3885 Jackson St., in Riverside. Free lunch, many raffle prizes, with the support of neighboring vendors will highlight the day. Several distinguished speakers including: Clifford Eke, MD, president of the American Cancer Society, will speak on colon and prostate cancers; Dave Williams, MD, of the Center for Lifestyle Medicine, will speak on the role of nutrition and genetics in the prevention of cancer; Tanya Price will speak on the early detection and treatment of blood cancers.

“We have an opportunity to significantly reduce California death rates from colon cancer through regular screening,” said Dr. Eke, who works with cancer patients daily. This type of cancer can be prevented through early detection and removal of polyps. By doing so, you take a key step toward staying well,” added Willie Grant, co-chair of the African American Community Outreach Committee for the American Cancer Society in the Inland Empire.

This event is sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) through a special grant, with support from Parkview Community Hospital, the County of Riverside; the County of San Bernardino; Inland Agency; The Pink Ribbon Place; and others. Thanks to improvements in prevention, early detection, and treatment, more than a million people in the U.S. count themselves as survivors of colon cancer; and more than 12 million are surviving with a history of some kind of cancer. American Cancer Society can help. Visit cancer.org or call 1.800.227.2345 for details.
