This section is needed today just as bad as it was needed in the sixties. Al l of us have horror stories of last minute changes in voting places or misinformation in poor communities and who can forget what happened in Florida with intimidation by law enforcement. A 8 to 1 vote by the highest court in the country is acknowledging we still have a long way to go in America before we can tell other countries how to hold bias free elections for al l its citizens. However, I am trying to understand how Justice Clarence Thomas voted against the decision. I can only think that he has taken on the mindset of his oppressors during his childhood in Georgia. Some experts claim that when some people are captured or kidnapped they sometimes take on the mission of the captor. I don’t want to think that of Thomas because he has been out of Georgia for a long time. Maybe it is like they say “you can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy. ”
Ben Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP said Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is “one of the most crucial enforcement provisions of the Voting Rights Act.” Jealous went on to say, quoting Chief Justice Roberts; “the historic accomplishments of the Voting Rights Act are undeniable.”
I want to commend the court for its decision because Jim
Crow, Jr. is still carrying out acts generated by his father. Al l we have to
do is look at what that 88 year old white supremacist did a few weeks ago when
he killed a Black security officer at a Jewish Museum just because of race and
religion. President Obama has had more threats on his life than any other
president, just because of the color of his skin. We still have more strange
happenings in poor and racially diverse neighborhoods during election time than
white neighborhoods. We experience strange things here in Riverside and San
Bernardino counties during recent elections so the court got it right by
preserving Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
Obama’s Honeymoon is Over?
The debate is on about the honeymoon being over for President Obama. I never knew he had been on one. I remember being in a conversation with my white coworkers back in 1963 when I got married. Most not al l that were married were talking about the places they had gone when they got married and the amount of money they received in gifts. Of course they wanted to know where Cheryl and I went or what we did. I responded that we got married on a Saturday looked for a place to live and I returned to work on Monday so I could get a paycheck to sustain us for what we had just done. I did not know anyone who had taken a honeymoon after they had gotten married. I say that to say President Obama has never had a honeymoon. Why?
Before Obama took office the press was asking him to comment on the economy because then President George Bush was not taking responsibility for anything. The pres s was claiming that Obama was afraid to speak out even when Obama said in America we have only one President at a time. Then the day he was sworn in they blamed him for the bad debt and the government bailout money. They lambasted Obama for not having al l of his appointed position filled including those 5 to 6 thousands that serve under them. The Republicans from day one accused him of spending too much even though they were the ones who put the country in debt plus let the oil companies gouge us with high prices. It was the press that complained that George Bush did not spend any time with them but started complaining in less than 30 days that Obama was spending too much time with them. It was the press that said Obama is taking on too much so they blamed him for overworking. Obama went to Egypt and was criticized. Rush Limbaugh the un-elected spokesperson for the Republican Party declared they want Obama to fail . Former Vice President Dick Cheney, the silent one, has been on the attack against Obama for the past two months and now you say the honeymoon is over.
Just like me after I got married, I was too busy making a living that there was no time off for that kind of thing. I had heard of the words honeymoon and vacation but could afford neither at the time. Likewise Obama had heard of the presidential honeymoon but being the first African American to hold the position he knew he would not get one nor could he afford the luxury of believing he would get one. So he did like many Americans, he went to work while his cri tics criticized him for working. Now if you want to know who had a honeymoon while president try Bush for the full year of 2008.
