This Week In America

There is a lot to write about this week and I only have a small amount of space.

However I’m going to take a stab at it and hope I get my point across.

The many issues are: Colin Powell’s resignation, San Bernardino County Schools Retirement loss, Scott Konopasek’s inability to manage and count votes, the six year old boy shot with a Taser gun in Florida by a security guard, and the reduction of pregnancies in our youth between 10 and 14. All of these topics need a page all by themselves.

When Powell signed on with the Bush administration, I used the popular saying by Rev. William Jacks, “you can’t run with the rabbit and buddy with the hound.” Well Powell has run with Bush so long he now smells like him. All of his status with the world has crumbled and the pride of his African American brothers and sisters has grown dim. If his objection to the war was strong enough he would have resigned a long time ago.

Powell and other appointed positions should always be loyal to the American people and not to the appointing authority. The oath of office is about protecting the people not the leader when he or she is wrong. His legacy of bravery, integrity and diplomacy will suffer because he did not act in a timely manner.

Superintendent Herb Fisher and the San Bernardino County Board of Education are embarrassed over the $1.2 to $2 million sent to National Employee Benefit Services Inc. (NEBS) that is missing. The county Payroll Department deducts some $5 million dollars per month from employee’s paychecks and forwards it to NEBS for placement into the employee selected retirement fund. It appears as though somebody got sticky fingers and diverted at least $1.5 million into their pocket. The Superintendent needs to shore up all loop holes in the process to guarantee the employees money is secure.

There was a movie “White Men Can’t Jump” in the case of Scott Konopasek, some can’t manage or count. Scott, who held the San Bernardino County’s Registrar position, has resigned his position because he screwed up the last election and votes are still being counted. He knew this election was coming since he took office because it is scheduled every four years, yet he failed to hire and train enough staff to run a flawless election. There is no excuse other than he failed as a manager and could not count. Now he wants to set up a consulting firm so he can mess up other counties. Public beware he cannot count nor manage.

The citizens of Florida should be outraged over the security guard shooting of a six year old Black boy while they were in the administration office. Now I don’t know all of the details but I have seen and been around lots of six year olds. As a matter of fact I currently have two grandchildren who are six. I have pondered why a security guard would have to do that to a six year old other than he was afraid of Black boys. Maybe somebody out there has rationalized how and why it happened, if so please let me know.

Recently the Center of Disease Control in Atlanta released a report that our 10 to 14 year old girls are having fewer babies. This is a good sign that the sex education message is getting through, however, the rate for Black and Hispanic girls of the same age is still higher than Whites.

Now all of us know that the problem is with older men impregnating these young girls, therefore our older male population must be made aware of this serious issue as well. In 2002 there were 7,315 babies born to girls between 10 and 14 years of age. For every 1000 Black girls in 2002, 1.9 gave birth. It would be interesting to review the statistics for Riverside and San Bernardino County and see what we are doing to solve the problem here.

As you can see we have a lot of work to do and things to keep our eyes on and George Bush has not even been sworn in for his second term. Keep your eyes on the prize and hold on.
