Well this election is far from usual in the 5th supervisory district. For starters the incumbent has removed himself from the position under intense scrutiny and the caretaker cannot get involved in the political activities of the race. However, I want to share with my readers the person I would like to see hold the position for the next four years beginning in November 2004. That person is Danny Tillman.
Danny has served the community of San Bernardino very well as an elected school board member for over eight years and has an impressive record to his credit. He worked hard to help secure the necessary funding to complete Arroyo High School located on the Westside of San Bernardino, which was started when I served on the board. This is in the heart of the 5th supervisory district.
Danny also made it possible for local contractors of all races, to participate in the building of the school. I know this because the bids had to be published in local Black and Hispanic newspapers and one of the subcontractors was a Black-owned business.
Danny also uncovered over $40 million dollars hidden in hide away projects of the school districts budget. This is because Danny has budgetary skills that are so badly needed on the board to help reduce waste and ensure our tax dollars are being spent where they are needed.
Dannys experience working in the treasurer/tax-collectors office has already paid big dividends to us taxpayers and we can get an even bigger dividend with him as supervisor.
Danny also saw the need to forge a tighter bond with our Hispanic community and worked hard to select the school districts first Latino superintendent, Dr. Arturo Delgado. And with the help of Tony Dupre and Theresa Parra elected the boards first Hispanic female Dr. Elsa Valdez as president.
By the way, the second in command of the district is Dr. Judy White, Deputy Superintendent, who happens to be Black and grew up in San Bernardinos Delman Heights area. This was done without neglecting or trampling on the rights of others.
Danny also has the technology skills to help him keep pace with the tremendous workload that will come with the position of county supervisor. He also remains active in church and community which is a plus for that position. Im sure there are those in the school district who would not want to see him leave but speaking as a former school board member it would have been nice to have a friend on the county board of supervisors who understands educational issues. There are many things a former school board member can do as a county supervisor to help the local schools.
These are just a few of the concrete examples of Dannys leadership.
Im aware of the other candidates seeking this office and under usual circumstances I would be hard pressed to endorse one over the other, however these are unusual times and Danny has what I see as the required skills to take us from the politics of old. Danny will be a fresh face to place before the state. Danny will give us a new start from a past of corruption.
Danny will bring us credibility in a county of mistrust. Danny will bring us a demonstrated commitment to handle the diversity of issues that are facing the county at this time. We urge all to vote Danny Tillman for Supervisor of the 5th District in San Bernardino County.
