Turn Back the Hands of Time

Back in 1972 or thereabout Tyrone Davis put some words to music that so many of us would say every day and made it a number one hit song.

The words were “If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time.” I thought of this song when I heard Kobe Bryant tell the world “I’m sorry, ashamed and disgusted with myself.”

That took great courage from someone so young and then he said while trying to get enough saliva in his mouth, “If I could just turn back the hand of time.” This was his apology to his wife and family.

Many of us have found ourselves in situations where we have said I wish I could turn back the hands of time. Bill Clinton has said “If I could turn back the hands of time,” there would be no Monica Lewinsky scandal.

King David said if I could turn back the hands of time and not have committed adultery and killed (Bathsheba’s) husband. President Nixon said “if I could just turn back the hand of time” and not have ordered that beak-in at the Democratic headquarters there would be no Watergate. George Bush has said (or will say) “If could only turn back the hands of time, I would have deleted those sixteen words about Iraq buying Uranium from Niger out of my State of the Union Speech.” Only time will tell where that one is going to end.

Governor Gray Davis is saying “If I could only turn back the hands of time” I would not be caught up in this recall movement. The Catholic Church is saying “If I could just turn back the hands of time” we would not be in this sex scandal with our priests.

The young lady who brought the charges of sexual assault against Kobe Bryant has or will be saying “I wish I could turn back the hand of time.” This will come after the media junkies get her name and history and plaster it throughout the public. Some will say her past is irrelevant while others will make up things to say about her. Reports are already out that she tried to commit suicide after a breakup with her boyfriend.

If true, this is drastic for a nineteen year old. Kobe has already sung the song and as the public make up things about him he will sing it louder and louder. There will be questions like, why did I invite her up to my room? Why did I go up to his room? Why didn’t I just turn in and rent a movie? Why didn’t I just ignore his charming smile? Is all of this publicity worth the fifteen minutes of fame? Why do people just make up lies on me? What impact will this have on the rest of my life? Will this be the only thing people will remember about me? If I could just “Turn back the hand of time.”

None of us know how this is going to end but all of us can be sure of this one thing, you cannot turn back the hand of time. Each second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year that goes by with something undone or something you wanted to do but did not do or in the case of Kobe something done you wished you had not done cannot be re-done.

So what is a person to do? Use the time you have been given wisely so that you won’t have to join those singing “If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time” yourself.
