Prior to my illness I had the opportunity to meet with several of the candidates or members of their staff who are seeking statewide office.

In the Governor’s race, I had the opportunity to meet with Gov. Gray Davis and candidate Bill Simon. Of great concern to me is what they are planning to do for the 2.4 million African Americans living in the State of California. With an estimated $50 plus billion buying power, Gray Davis’ past history and current posture favors the Black community with his many appointments of African Americans to the judicial bench and small business administration. Some of Davis’ local appointments are: Judge Richard Fields, Judge Katrina West, Small Business Administration board member Otis Clopton, and State Domestic Violence Advisory Councilmember Eliza Daniely-Woolfolk.
Davis has also been a good friend to education and law enforcement which are key agencies to the social welfare of the Black community. Important to Black media, Davis has held several meetings with Black publishers and Black-owned radio stations in an effort to explain and give access to advertising dollars.
As to recommendations for propositions and local measures, we want to emphasize our desire to place public notices in Black-owned media when seeking contractors for various construction and building projects. We also favor clean water, clear air, less traffic congestion, more after school programs for our children and we also want to be a part of the building process which equates into business contracts and jobs. For too long we have voted for these measures only to be left out when it comes to sharing in the money. So to all the elected officials and those seeking elected positions, the Black community will no longer be ignored after the voting is over.
