Circle the wagons because polygamy is riding, under the cover of night, closer and closer to the ballot box. As sure as fat meat is greasy, most women will be outraged while many of the men might be amused and tempted to vote for the right of men to legally have multiple wives. The argument would clearly be based on the fact that there’s not enough men to go around especially since so many are homosexual and/or incarcerated for many years these days. Also it would be argued that children need a father figure in the home and there are far too many single mothers that are turning out poorly prepared adults. Another point of consideration would likely be that millions of men and women are involved in adulterous relationships anyway; therefore, polygamy would cut down on the high rate of divorces and actually preserve families. But the biggest argument would come from the Muslim and Mormon communities around the world.
According to the Ethnographic Atlas Codebook, of 1,231 societies noted, 186 were monogamous, 453 had occasional polygamy, 588 had more frequent polygamy, and 4 had polyandry (a woman with multiple husbands). At the same time, even within societies which allow polygamy, the actual practice of polygamy occurs relatively rarely. There are exceptions: in Senegal for example, nearly 47 percent of marriages are multiple. To take on more than one wife often requires considerable resources: this may put polygamy beyond the means of the vast majority of men within those societies and the United States. Such appears to be the case in many traditional Islamic societies, and in Imperial China. Within polygamous societies, multiple wives often become a status symbol denoting wealth, power, and fame. I believe that American society is headed for a time when single men of great financial means and affluence will once again live as kings with socially accepted and/or legalized harems, several concubines or wives. Circle the wagons!
