Throughout the Ice Age, Scarcity was the keystone problem. Greed, spurring fighting as a normal daily occurrence, was the keystone solution. Yet certain groups would stop fighting each other and join forces if attacked by a commonly disliked outsider. Rather than these enmities and rivalries being a unity, they formed look-alikes of unity--i.e. Alliance, Coalition, and Liaison connections. Being only temporary joinings allowed for changing combinations of fighting units--units who otherwise remained dissimilar, distinct, and individualistic. Such Civility patterns—doing the proper thing for the group out of: "every man for himself" self-interest—is seen today (e.g. in political and legal systems). Despite their avowed individualism, most European males have been (for the last 45,000 years), and remain, quite philosophically generically similar--almost machine like. This is because their system of values has been, and remains, oriented to things of Value (i.e. Materialism) rather than to things of Worth (i.e. the finer things in life that money cannot buy). Their typical “I” (Individualism) society features are: looking for differences in people, individuality, uniqueness, being competitive, advocating individual rights, separateness and independence, survival of the fittest, and control over Nature. A way this shows is that Europeans have invariably needed to fashion an enemy by generating differences between them and peaceful people and then exerting all sorts of power over them. This ultimately derives from self-created Supernatural values.
Since Primitive Europeans were "living on the edge" to survive--with each greedily grabbing-- this raises a moral dilemma issue. Were these practices a display of constructive survival which justified Greed and Kill/Take/Destroy? Or, did they conform to the European concepts of the "Seven Deadly Sins"? These "Seven Deadly Sins" (borrowed out of the Ancient African Bible) are: (1) Vainglory or Pride; (2) Wrath (anger); (3) Envy; (4) Lust (understood as excessive or illicit sexual desire); (5) Gluttony (including drunkenness); (6) Avarice (covetousness); and (7) Sloth (laziness, especially in pursuing the virtues). Arrogance, said Pope Gregory in the 6th century, is a serious moral offense and a source for the other six sins. Associated with them are Fetters (e.g. hatred, fear, lies, and jealousy) and Self-Absorption (e.g. maladaptive "Me, Me" first Individualism). These vices are the producers of evil and some kind of hatred is present in any form of evil. However, by the time the Ice Age was over and their actual "Survival Greed" was no longer needed, Greedy pursuits had become "second nature," despite the lack of environmental Scarcity. Excuses were manufactured so as to keep getting significantly more than was needed via Kill/Take/Destroy--the only methods they knew. Furthermore, greed never allows one to think one has enough. That means: (a) one stays in a miserable state of unhappiness; (b) the "Seven Deadly Sins" are rationalized into being "the right thing to do"; (c) greed demands segregation and deception out of (d) constant fear of retaliation from victims or (e) from having ones ill-gotten gains "stolen." A "second nature" of Greed first means using ones Brute Brain as a way of life--characteristically manifesting traits similar to psychopaths. But the difference is Brutes' causes derive from a philosophical "Inside-Out" amoral worldview. There is a sincere belief that what the world Sages agree to as Right is just the opposite. For example, they simply do not care about enhancing the suffering of the truly needy and, in fact, gain "sick" pleasure from contributing to it. Second, there is problematic functioning of these Brutes' brain chemistry in the processing of Oxytocin--which normally causes people to be moral. Third, Kill/Take/Destroy is "sick" pleasure which, like winning, becomes addicting.
During Biblical times, “Greed” was on lists with murder, adultery, and malice (Mk. 7:22). Because desire for riches or possessions take first place in the greedy person’s heart, greed is equated with idolatry (Col. 3:5). "Living on the edge" with respect to survival is not a justifiable excuse because it simply means one was too lazy to do the necessary preparation to take care of the serious business of life in the future. It is proper to be greedy in wanting enough in order to get the job done; proper in elevating oneself; proper in desiring to give Selfless Service to those who really need it and will accept it; proper in "wildly" enjoying life at the appropriate times.
